Gloucester, Massachusetts
These pictures were taken in August 2007 while walking around Eastern Point area of Gloucester, Massachusetts. Eastern Point is a peninsula that creates the harbor and has on it the Eastern Point Lighthouse, Dog Bar Breakwater, Eastern Point Yacht Club. There are also beaches and ponds and rocky shores.
The first lighthouse was built in 1831 and in 1890 the lighthouse was rebuilt as it stands today. In 1987, Eastern Point Lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
The Dog Bar Breakwater, which extends a half mile into the mouth of the outer harbor from Eastern Point Light, was completed in 1905.
The famous rock and reef of Norman's Woe is on the other side of the harbor but several poems have been written about the Eastern Point side. Longfellow's "The Wreck of the Hesperus", written in 1839, was loosely based on a ship that wrecked on Norman's Woe.
