Black Swallowtail Butterfly

Black Swallowtail

So happy to see a few butterflies this year!  In the first few springs we lived here there were SO MANY butterflies!  It was wonderful.  Then things went wrong for them I guess.  Hard winter frosts made many of the plants they like die back to the ground and hence bloom much later.  Other things have been blooming earlier due to warmer weather.  Whatever it was, there have been very few butterflies.  This year a few more, and I was very happy to find this black swallowtail yesterday.  It is not perfect — it seems to have lost one of its tails…   It is enjoying a Mexican Hat flower.   We planted some wildflower seeds in the yard a few years ago and the Mexican Hats took over.  They are beautiful this time of year — a sea of yellow and green.

White Prickly Poppies line drawing

White Prickly Poppies

This is a kind of line drawing version of White Prickly Poppies (see below).  The feeling is totally different from the original or the version below where I tried to pull out the transparent character of the petals, but still I think interesting.

They are now at their peak now in this part of the  Hill Country and  you often see clumps of these beautiful plants along the road.  We are lucky to have a number of them on our property.  This photo, however, was taken earlier in the spring on Willow City Loop near Fredericksburg.

We were in Rockport, Texas, for a quick trip and Nan and Donald took us birding for a couple of hours.  They had had a huge deluge 2 nights before.  There was water everywhere, on the roads, in the fields.  And one of the birding sites was closed.  But we did find a few at this location, including this Stilt.

Fungus Among Us

We found these beautiful large fungi on the dead half of a tree in Ingleside, Texas.  Of course I couldn’t resist capturing them!
