Transfiguration Cathedral Seriously Damaged, Odesa, Ukraine

This is not the type of post I intended to make, documenting our 2013 cruise in Ukraine. Yesterday I tried to find out what was happening in Odesa and discovered that in July 2023 Transfiguration Cathedral was heavily damaged.

The following photograph is from the New York Times in their article about the attack.

From the NY Times article:
“President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia views Odesa as a culturally important part of his nation. But many in the Ukrainian city reject the connection and view the country that has been attacking it with loathing.”

This New York Times article, Odesa Is Defiant. It’s Also Putin’s Ultimate Target, how much Russia wants to take possession of this great port city because it is his key to the Black Sea.

From Wikipedia: “On 25 January 2023, its historic city centre was declared a World Heritage Site and added to the List of World Heritage in Danger by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in recognition of its influence on cinema, literature, and the arts. The declaration was made in response to the bombing of Odesa during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, which has damaged or destroyed buildings across the city.”

A few photos of the Transfiguration Cathedral taken in 2013 here, but I will come back to it as part of Odessa in 2013.

I’ve changed my spelling of Odesa from Odessa to Odesa. Like Kyiv and Kiev, one of them is the Russian spelling. From now on it is Odesa.
