I was working on photos I have taken in Santa Fe and discovered so many of the St. Francis Cathedral, mostly interior, that I am making a separate story for the cathedral. The current building was built on the site of two previous previous churches. It was designed in the Romanesque Revival style and was completed in 1887. The stained glass windows were imported from France. I am no expert on this building, but wanted to share my photographs of it. <\/p>\n\n\n

I was unable to get a good photograph of the exterior — it’s in a very crowded, busy area with lots of cars everywhere. The photo to the right below is the altar screen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Above the altar is the San Damiano Crucifix, a replica of the crucifix in Assisi, Italy. I read that the crucifix at right is wood.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The stations of the cross is done in New Mexico Mission Style. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Below left is a statue of Kateri Tekakwitha (1656\u20131680), the first North American Indian to be beatified. The statue was created by Estella Loretto, a sculptor from the nearby Jemez Pueblo, and installed in August 2003. At right is Mary, Mother of Life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may have noticed scaffolding in some of the photos for renovation work going on in 2009.<\/p>\n\n\n
