Our First Pandemic Trip, Part 1

Sunset at Great Sand Dunes National Park, Colorado

The pandemic kept us at home for months, but finally in September we decided it would be safe to travel in our little motorhome, and set out for west Texas and Colorado. Not only did we have a pandemic, but California and Colorado were on fire. In the areas we visited in southern Colorado, we understood the constant heavy haze was from California fires and not Colorado fires. It was a challenge in many cases to get good photographs because of the haze, but after processing, many of the photographs were quite unusual. The photo above was taken at dusk at Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado. The dunes are always amazing in morning and evening light but the haze made this a rather unusual photograph.

Our first major stop was Palo Duro Canyon State Park near Amarillo, Texas. We camped in their campground and enjoyed a day and a half at the park. If you haven’t visited this park, I highly recommend it. You can camp in the park or at nearby campgrounds, including one near the park on the rim of the canyon, with views into the canyon.

Also near Amarillo is another site photographers like to visit: Cadillac Ranch… Well, it is explained by a photograph…

From Amarillo, we headed into Colorado. Stay tuned for Part 2!
